If your workstation is managed by ITS, updates are pushed to your computer on a weekly delay so that they can be vetted by ITS for a more reliable experience. Feature updates (major versions) are not pushed to your workstation automatically. These can be manually pulled by clicking "Check online for Microsoft updates."

Managing Updates in Windows 7

To manage updates in Windows 7, 

Click on the Windows button.

The Windows button is located at the bottom of your keyboard and has the Windows logo printed on it. Once you press it, a search bar will appear in the lower left corner of your screen.

Managing Updates in Windows 8

To mange updates in Windows 8,

  1. Open the Search menu.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Enter Control Panel in the search bar. A list will populate.
  4. Change the view settings to Small Icon.
  5. Click on Windows Updates.
  6. Click Check for Updates.

Your current update status will be displayed. If you have updates that you need to install, review the below section, Manually Installing Updates.

Updates automatically download and install when they’re available, which means that your PC always has the latest and best features. Windows 10 periodically checks for updates.

To There are two ways to manually check for updates,:

Method 1

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Select Settings, i.e., the gear icon.
  3. Click on Update & Security. 
  4. Click on Windows Update. 
  5. Select Check for updates.Alternatively, to manage updates in Windows 10, you can:

  1. Type Windows Update into the Search bar to the right of the Start Window button (Windows icon).
  2. Click Check for updates under Update status.

Manually Installing Updates in Windows 7 and 8

To manually install updates in either Windows 7 or 8,

  1. In the Windows Update window, click on the Check for updates option.  Windows will then search for updates and give you a list of how many updates were found.
  2. Select the updates you want to install.
  3. Click the OK button.
  4. A new window will appear. Click on the Install Updates button to install your updates.
  5. Restart the computer after the updates have been installed.
  6. Repeat this process until all updates are installed.
