Students, staff, and faculty can compress files, folders, and programs.

Compression decreases file size and reduces the amount of space that files take up on a computer or removable storage devices.

Compressing Files in MacOS / OS X

To compress files, 

  1. Browse to find the file or folder you wish to compress. 
  2. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard.
  3. Click on the file or folder item. 
  4. On MacOS / OS X version 10.9 or later, select the Compress [name of file or folder] option. Doing so will create a .zip file with the name of the file or folder that was compressed.
  5. Double-click on the .zip file to decompress it.
