Objective

While the website does not require regular updates regarding verbiage change(s), it can be updated anytime by the authorized site administrator(s). The website must be updated at least once a year ("annual update"), in order to reflect the new date of the CT Police K-9 Olympics. This guide will detail the steps necessary for the annual update.

Background:

The new Connecticut Police K-9 Olympics website is built on Aurora–a multisite WordPress service provided by ITS to the university community.

Requirements:

  • You are a K-9 Olympics Website Administrator
  • You have authorization to post events on the K-9 Event Calendar (if not, please contact WebDev Team)
  • Finally, this guide assumes that you are familiar with WordPress site administration. If you are new to WordPress, please refer to the Training and Guides pages by our Aurora Team.


Updating Pages

The anniversary and date of the K-9 Olympics would be the only information that would require an update on an annual basis in majority of cases. The matrix below shows which page needs to be updated in order to update the key information

  1.  Navigate to https://k9-olympics.police.uconn.edu/wp-admin/ and login using your NetID / Password

  2.  Click on "Pages" from the sidebar menu



  3.  Search pages that contain information that needs to be updated. For example, in order to update the event date, search for "2021"



    All pages containing "2021" will be listed. Edit a given page by hovering over the row corresponding to a page and clicking on "Edit"




  4.  Once the editor opens, amend the information as necessary and click on "Update"


Tips on Formatting

When copying content from Microsoft Word (or other word processor / rich text editors) and pasting into WordPress editor, weird characters may result due to underlying formatting, as shown in the example screenshot, below.


There are many resources that provide tips on how to tackle such issues, for example WP Engine's How to Fix WordPress Formatting Issues.

Updating the (new) K-9 Olympics Date

Visit the K-9 Olympics Event Calendar page, click on the "Submit Event" button at the bottom right of your screen, and provide the necessary details. You need to lookup the "Primary" calendar, which you can filter from the list by typing "Connecticut Police".


Once you are satisfied with the amount of necessary detail, click "Submit Event" button.

Upon submitting the event, it should auto-approve, since you are a member of admin group for this calendar. The K-9 Olympics home page should reflect the new date shortly.
