VoiceThread Assignment: Create

This article details how to create a VoiceThread (VT) “Create” assignment. A “Create” assignment requires students to create their own VoiceThread and submit their created VoiceThread to the assignment link.

To ensure that students are able to keep the VoiceThread they create as part of their VoiceThread content collection, please follow the recommended process detailed below.

Step 1: Create a VT Home Page link

Before creating the VoiceThread Create assignment link, instructors should create a VT Home Page link for students. The VT Home Page link will give students access to the VT homepage where they should create a VoiceThread that they will later select for their VT assignment submission.

  1. Open your HuskyCT course and navigate to the Content Area page where you want to add a VoiceThread link.

  2. Under the Build Content drop-down menu, scroll down and select VoiceThread.

  3.  A new tab will open and display the VoiceThread link options. Select VT Home page, name it, and click Publish.

Step 2: Build the VT Assignment “Create” link

  1. Once you have created the VT Home Page link (that students will use to create their VoiceThreads), you can build the VoiceThread Assignment itself.

    1. On the Content Area page where you want to post the VoiceThread Assignment, under Build Content, select VoiceThread.

    2. From the setup menu, select Assignment Builder.

  2. From the Assignment Builder page, select Create and click Continue.

  3. Set the Participation requirements, including the minimum number of comments and slides students need to include in their VoiceThread. Scroll down to select options for commenting, playback, users permissions, and student gallery.

    1. Enable Student Gallery if you would like students to be able to view and/or comment on each other's assignment submissions. Student Gallery is accessible through the VoiceThread assignment submission link.

  4. From the next page, provide an assignment name (this will be the name of the link in HuskyCT) and enter the Instructions (this will be visible for students after they click the assignment link).

    1. Entering a Start Date, Due Date, and Close Date is optional. These dates will specify when students can/cannot access the assignment.

    2. The “Assessment” options determine the possible points of the Grade Center column that is automatically created after publishing the assignment. Warning: Do not change the possible points of the VT assignment column after it has been published. This will break the grading mechanism.

      1. Percentage: the assignment (and grade center column) has 100 possible points.

      2. Complete/Incomplete: assignment (and grade center column) has 1 possible point.

      3. Points: allows you to specify the possible points from 0-100. If ‘0' is chosen, '0’ is also the maximum points that can be input during grading. VoiceThread is not designed for use as extra credit.

    3. Click Publish to finish.

  5. Once you see the “Success!” message, close this tab and refresh your HuskyCT browser window. The Assignment link will appear.

Student Assignment Submissions

Warning: To ensure students are able to keep their VoiceThread as a product/artifact demonstrating their work, please review the recommended approach detailed below and instruct students to follow the directions outlined here: https://kb.uconn.edu/space/TL/26019369862

  1. Students can access the VoiceThread assignment link to view the assignment requirements. However, students should create their VoiceThreads from the VT homepage link that was created initially.

  2. Once students finish creating their VoiceThread , they should return to the VoiceThread assignment link, and click Start assignment.

  3. Students should then choose Copy from VoiceThread and select their created VoiceThread. This will create a copied version for submission.

  4. Students should then “Select All” slides, and specify that “All Comments” will be copied over.

  5. Finally students can click Submit.
