Adding Kaltura Videos to HuskyCT

 Faculty and staff can embed and share Kaltura videos on and outside of HuskyCT. 

This guide shows you how to publish your videos to a HuskyCT course. If instead you need to publish your video publicly, follow this guide: Sharing Kaltura Media Publicly

Methods for sharing videos within HuskyCT include:

To “embed” a video is to make it appear as part of a webpage in contrast to having a hyperlink listed. The video can appear in-line with text, similar to news websites. An embedded video can be hosted (uploaded to) one service and then embedded in another (ex. uploaded to Kaltura or YouTube and then shown on HuskyCT).

Adding Kaltura Videos in HuskyCT (click to expand instructions)

The following method will embed the Video Link only. When selected from the student-side, this causes the video to open to a new page. To embed the video with the “Media Player”, please reference the next expand.

  1. Log into HuskyCT.

  2. Enter your course.

  3. Navigate to where you would like the content to reside.

  4. Click on the Build Content button.

  5. Select Kaltura Embed Media 1.3.

     

  6. A new window will load with the option to select a video that is listed in your My Media tab. Click on the Embed button to select the video you would like to add.

    • If you click the gear icon, you can change the settings for that video (thumbnail size, etc.)

  7. After selecting the media, it will create the content item. You can edit it by selecting

    • You can also choose other options such as display dates and tracking via the Options segment, as shown below by editing the newly created item.

  1. In a Content area in your course, navigate to Build Content.

  2. Select Item.

  3. From the text box in the Content Information section, select the encircled plus sign. (If not already completed, select the ellipsis to show the second line of options.)

4. From the Add Content list, select Kaltura Embed Media 1.3.

5. Reference Step 6 from the section above.

6. After selecting Embed, assign the video a name and adjust any other options from the Item settings as necessary.

7. Select Submit when finished. The video with media-player should now appear in the content area.

Embedding Kaltura Videos with Quizzes in HuskyCT

To embed Kaltura videos with quizzes in HuskyCT, 

  1. Log into HuskyCT.

  2. Enter your course. Kaltura Video Quizzes are integrated into the Grade Center. Thus, a column will automatically be created in your Grade Center once you follow these steps.

  3. Click on the Assessments button.

  4. Select Kaltura Video Quiz.

  5. A new window will appear with the option to select a video quiz that is listed in your My Media tab. Click on the Select button for the video you’d like to add.

  6. After selecting the media, enter a name for the content, and a description if necessary.

    1. You can also choose other options such as display dates, tracking via the Options segment, points possible, and how they're displayed in the Grade Center.  A column will be created in the Gradebook to record this quiz.

To embed and share Kaltura videos in Blackboard Discussion Board,

  1. Navigate to the Discussion Board.

  2. You can either add the video when you create the Forum or add the video as a Discussion Thread.

    1. To add it in the Forum,

      1. click Create Forum.

      2. Enter a name for the forum. 

      3. Click Add Content (plus sign) at the right.

      4. If you don't see the Add Content icon, click the More/Ellipse icon to the right.

      5. Select Kaltura Media. 

      6. Once the My Media window opens, click Embed on the video you want to share. The video will then appear in the text box.

      7. Click on Kaltura Media. 

      8. Select the video. 

      9. Complete the rest of the Blackboard fields. 

    2. To add it as a Discussion Thread,

      1. Click on the Forum in Discussion Board.

      2. Click Create Thread.

      3. Enter a name for the thread. 

      4. Click Add Content (plus sign) at the right.

      5. If you don't see the Add Content icon, click the More/Ellipse icon to the right.

      6. Click on Kaltura Media.

      7. Select the video. 

      8. Complete the rest of the Blackboard fields. 

If instructors add videos to their course content areas and discussion boards, they can also add these videos to the Media Gallery. Doing so will allow the instructor to view analytics on the videos, like how long the videos are watched, who is watching the video, etc.  

To embed videos from Kaltura into the Media Gallery,

  1. Open your course.

  2. Add the tool to your course. To do so, 

    1. Click on the + sign.

    2. Click Tool Link. 

    3. Enter a name for the link.

    4. Select Media Gallery. You can make it available to users if you want students to be able to see the videos in the Media Gallery.

  3. Click on the Channel Actions icon to check the settings for the Media Gallery.

  4. Click Edit.

    • Turn on Display embedded media in this Media Gallery if you wish to add any video you embed in your course.  This is helpful if you want the analytics for all the course videos. 

  5. Click Add Media if you wish to manually embed the videos or use the setting above (Display embedded media in this Media Gallery) to embed the videos.

    1. Select the videos you want to share by clicking the box(es) to the left of each video. 

    2. Click Publish.

  6. Once the Media Gallery is added, you will then be able to view the video analytics. To do so,

    1. Click on the Channel Actions icon.

    2. Click on Analytics.
