Understanding Class Details in the Class Search at classes.uconn.edu

The Class Search is used to look up classes in the UConn Class Search (PATH) system. 

This page will describe how to understand the Class Details panel of the Class Search results to help students identify classes that meet their academic and scheduling needs.

Conducting a Class Search

Navigate to http://classes.uconn.edu .

Enter or select search criteria in the Search Classes panel.

Select Search.

Reviewing Class Details

Select a course in the Search Results listing that you want to explore further.

A Class Details panel will display information related to the course. The selected course will be highlighted in a goldenrod color in the Search Results panel.

The Class Details panel is shown for JAPN 1101.

Please note that when a course is selected from the Search Results, in some cases the Class Details panel will display the Class Details for a particular Section and in some cases the Class Details panel will display the Class Details for the Course.

Class Details for a Section

The Class Details for a Section will display the following:

  • a Section # immediately following the Subject, Catalog Number, and Title

  • section-specific Class Details, including Seats and Waitlist information, Reserved Seats, Required Linked Sections, and Meeting Info

Also, the section will be selected in the All Sections area.

Example: The image below shows the Class Details panel for BIOL 1110 Section 001, which is a section.

Class Details for a Course

The Class Details for a Course will not display the following:

  • a Section # immediately following the Subject, Catalog Number, and Title

  • section-specific Class Details

Also, a section will not be selected in the All Sections area.

Example: The image below shows the Class Details panel for BIOL 1110, which is a course.

The Class Details panel is shown for the parent course where section-specific details, like Required Linked Sections and Meeting Info is not provided.

The Class Details panel may display any of the following information:

If the Class Details region does not apply to the course or section, it will not display.

Description

The Description will provide the catalog description of the course.

Reserved Seats

Some sections have seats reserved for certain groups of students – for example, the section might have a set number of seats reserved for students in a particular major. If so, this region will describe how many seats are reserved, followed by how many seats are available (e.g, 10 reserved, 10 available).

If no section is selected in the All Sections region, this area may indicate ‘Varies by Section.’

Registration Restrictions

Registration Restrictions include any conditions a student must meet in order to enroll in the class, such as prerequisites or credit restrictions.

Required Linked Sections

Some sections require concurrent enrollment in associated section types, for instance lecture (LEC), discussion (DIS), and/or laboratory (LAB). The Required Linked Sections area will indicate all the required sections that must be taken concurrently with the selected section displayed in the Class Details panel.

Depending on your search criteria, the system will automatically exclude (gray out) sections that do not meet your search criteria.

The Required Linked Sections region is described in more detail in a later section.

Section Attributes

If the course satisfies (a) Topic(s) of Inquiry, (b) Content Area(s), or (c) a Competency criteria, those will be reflected in this Section Attributes area.

Meeting Info

This region indicates the days, times and/or dates the section meets.

If no section is selected in the All Sections region, this area may indicate Varies by Section.

All Sections

The All Sections region displays all the sections for the course in the Class Details panel. If a section is selected, it will be highlighted in a goldenrod color.

Depending on your search criteria, the system will automatically exclude (gray out) sections that do not meet your search criteria.

The All Sections region is described in more detail in a later section.

The Class Details panel is shown, including sections for the class description, reserved seats, registration restrictions, required linked sections, section attributes, meeting info, and all sections.

All Sections

The All Sections area will display all sections associated with the course. The grid includes the following section information:

Class #

The Class # is the number used to enroll in the class.

Section #

The section number may be followed by a letter to indicate the section type, including:

  • D = Discussion (e.g., Section 002D)

  • L = Laboratory (e.g., Section 024L)

Type

There are several section types, also referred to as section components, including:

  • DIS = Discussion

  • IND = Independent Study

  • LAB = Laboratory

  • LEC = Lecture

  • LSA = Lecture - Stand Alone

  • SEM = Seminar

  • PRA = Practicum

Meets

This field indicates the meeting pattern for the section, which displays either:

  • the days/times/dates the section is scheduled

  • By Arrangement

  • Online Instruction

Status

The status of the section indicates whether the section is:

  • A = Active

  • C = Cancelled

  • S = Stop Further Enrollment

Depending on your search criteria, the system will automatically exclude (gray out) sections that do not meet your search criteria.

Examples:

  • If you included a campus in your search criteria, all sections that meet at all other campuses will be grayed out.

  • If you selected Honors in the advanced search criteria, all non-Honors sections will be grayed out.

Required Linked Sections

Some sections require concurrent enrollment in associated section types, for instance lecture (LEC), discussion (DIS), and/or laboratory (LAB). The Required Linked Sections area will indicate possible required sections that must be taken concurrently with the selected section displayed in the Class Details panel.

The Required Linked Sections region will not display unless a section from the All Sections area is selected.

Examples:

The Class Details for BIOL 1102 Section 001 LEC displays LAB options in the Required Linked Sections area. One of these LAB sections must be taken if enrolled in the BIOL 1102 Section 001 LEC.

The Required Linked Sections area is highlighted on the Class Details panel displaying linked LAB sections.

In some cases, more than one Required Linked Section is needed. The Class Details for CHEM 1122 Section 002 LEC displays both DIS and LAB options in the Required Linked Sections area. One of each of these DIS and LAB sections must be taken if enrolled in the CHEM 1122 Section 002.

Alternatively, if you have a desired DIS or LAB section that you select for CHEM 1122, for example, CHEM 1122 Section 023D DIS, the Required Linked Sections area displays the only associated LEC and LAB sections that must be taken with CHEM 1122 Section 023D DIS.

Class Details Calendar

Select the VIEW CALENDAR button to see the all of sections of the course offering plotted on a calendar view. The weekly calendar view will display in the Calendar panel.

When you hover over a particular section, the shading that represents that section turns a bright yellow and the section will display immediately following the Calendar title bar.

Search Results versus Class Details Link

Search Results Link

If you wish to capture the Search Results link and share it with someone (e.g., an advisor, instructor, or peer), select the Link widget in the Search Results title bar. Selecting the Link widget copies the link to the clipboard.

Example: For Fall 2025, AH - Allied Health Sciences, Storrs Campus classes, the following is the link that captures these specific search criteria: https://classes.uconn.edu/?srcdb=1258&subject=AH&camp=STORR%40STORRS

Class Details Link

If you wish to capture the Class Details link and share it with someone (e.g., your advisor, instructor, or peer), select the Link widget in the Class Details title bar. Selecting the Link widget copies the link to the clipboard.

Example: On the Class Details panel for AH 3005 Section 001 in Fall 2025, the Class Details link for this section/class number is: https://classes.uconn.edu/?details&srcdb=1258&crn=10463
