Social Security Number (Update SSN Request Task)

This is an IRS Requirement.  The University is required by law to request this information, and the student is required to provide it, regardless of age or filing status.

What is the TAX/SSN hold? 

If the University does not have an accurate SSN or ITIN on file for you, you may have the TAX/SSN hold assigned to your account.

What is the Update SSN Request task?

Twice per year, the University asks active students to update their SSN or ITIN if the University does not have one on file.  Students are assigned the Update SSN Request task, and complete that task to update their SSN/ITIN.

  • If a student completes the Update SSN Request task and provides an SSN or ITIN, the TAX/SSN hold will be removed overnight.

  • If a student completes the Update SSN Request task and does not provide an SSN or ITIN, the TAX/SSN hold will not be removed.

  • If a student submits their SSN as part of the Update SSN Request task but does NOT finish the task, their SSN will be recorded and their hold will be removed overnight, but the Update SSN Request task will remain in the student’s Action List.  They will need to finish the Update SSN Request task for it to be removed from their Action List.

Note: the TAX/SSN hold does not restrict a student’s ability to register or access UConn services.

 

How to complete the task

 

  1. Select “Action List”.

  1. Review the introduction and click “Mark As Read in the upper right corner.

  1. Click “Next” in the upper right corner.

  1. Read the statement and respond accordingly by selecting the appropriate radio button. Update your SSN/TIN (if providing one). Click “Save”.

  1. Review the message and select “OK.

  1. Click “Mark As Read in the upper right corner.

 

  1. Click “Next in the upper right corner.

  1. Review the text and click “Accept in the upper right corner.

  1. To print, select “Printable Page or select “Next to continue.

 

  1. Click “Finish to complete the task.

  1. Next, you will automatically be taken to the Completed Agreements page.
