Securing your Teams Meeting

Securing your Teams Meeting

Instructors can use features in Teams to ensure a secure, professional environment for their online classes.

ITS recommends using the Desktop App when Hosting a Teams session to be certain you have access to the full suite of Host controls.

You can use Meeting Templates to quickly set teaching-appropriate restrictions: Microsoft Teams - Meeting Types.

The Controls Menu

While in a meeting, use the “Controls” button in the top toolbar to set meeting restrictions.

Participant Mute

You may disallow the Participants from unmuting themselves. The Participants will need to communicate through the Chat until they are unmuted. If you choose to do this and would like a Participant to speak, find them in the Participant Panel and click on their microphone icon that sits after their name and then select “Allow mic”. This will not unmute them but gives them the option to unmute themself.

If you would like to restrict microphones, you must first disallow “Present”.

Restricting Screenshare

Avoid unauthorized screen/application sharing by un-checking “Present” in the Controls menu.

Locking your Meeting Room

Once all the participants are in the meeting, the host can lock the meeting. Anyone trying to join after the meeting room has been locked will be placed in the lobby and will require authorization to enter the meeting.

The Participant Panel

In the event a participant is disruptive, there are several actions the host can take. These are available by right-clicking on the user in the participant panel. Notable options are Disable camera, Make a Presenter, and in extreme cases, Remove from Meeting. If the room is locked, the user will not be able to return unless authorized by the host.
