Changes to Webex at UConn - Announcement
This guide follows an announcement made on May 28th, 2026.
UConn will begin a phased transition away from Webex with the goal of fully decommissioning the platform by June 2027.
What is changing
Beginning June 1, 2026:
Faculty and Graduate Students will receive a Webex Basic license by default
Webex Basic licenses will include:
Meetings up to 40 minutes
Up to 100 participants
Access to existing recordings
No ability to create new recordings
Access to Slido
Faculty requiring additional functionality may request an Enhanced license through ITS with a brief business or instructional justification using this link.
All other affiliations will no longer receive Webex licenses by default
Someone without a license may join meetings but not schedule them. These users will not have a Personal Room.
This transitional approach is intended to support faculty who currently rely on Webex for synchronous instruction while allowing the University time to migrate users toward institutionally supported alternatives such as Microsoft Teams and Blackboard Class Collaborate.
Why this transition is happening
This decision was made collaboratively between the departments that financially support Webex and reflects several factors:
Significant vendor cost increases
Continued growth and maturity of Microsoft Teams adoption
Declining reliance on Webex across many areas of the University
The need to align enterprise services with long-term institutional budget planning
The opportunity to consolidate support, training, and collaboration workflows around fewer enterprise platforms
Webex recordings and storage
The University currently maintains approximately 14TB of Webex recordings. Many recordings appear to be inactive or no longer needed. Over the next year, ITS and CETL will work with recording owners to review existing recordings and identify content that should be retained.
Content owners will be responsible for transferring any necessary recorded content from Webex to Kaltura prior to the decommissioning of the platform.

Webex survey
To help guide this transition, ITS and CETL are asking faculty who currently use Webex to complete a short survey describing how they use the platform and what features are most important to their teaching and collaboration workflows.

Better understand current Webex usage patterns
Identify feature gaps between platforms
Develop targeted training and migration resources
Support faculty during the transition process
