Updates to the UPrint Program
Starting in 2026, ITS and the UConn Budget and Planning Office will begin introducing a standardized fleet of UPrint printers that will be centrally funded.
Overview of Changes
Billing: UConn will centrally fund the UPrint devices. For the first year of the program, departments will be billed for usage. By not paying lease fees, the overall cost for departments will be significantly reduced.
Printers: The UPrint printers will remain the same type of multi-function device that offers printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. What’s new is that the devices will be rolled into a lifecycle program and have print management software installed.
With the lifecycle program, older devices will be replaced right away and others, as they age, in the following years. Eventually, all UPrint devices will be replaced on a regular basis, giving users access to consistent, well-performing equipment.
The print management software, PaperCut, introduces secure release functionality and better monitoring capabilities for billing, usage, and supplies. For example, when a printer’s ink becomes low, the system will initiate a supply delivery. The secure release functionality will give users – faculty, staff, student employees, and graduate assistants – more flexibility with printing. See a description below of how secure release printing works.
Maintenance: The ITS Technology Support Center will be the main point of contact for all maintenance and support requests for the UPrint printers. ITS will coordinate, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance.
Transition process: UPrint printers with PaperCut installed will be introduced on a rolling basis and after a printing assessment and discussion with the participating departments. ITS is deploying the new system on regional campuses this summer with a goal of being fully functional this fall. The Storrs campus will follow.
The new cost model, where departments only pay usage fees, will tentatively begin in Summer 2026.
PaperCut Secure Release Printing
The process for printing is slightly different with PaperCut installed.
Click “Print” on your computer.
Go to a UPrint printer at any location on a UConn campus.
Tap your One Card. If you do not have your One Card, sign in with your NetID credentials.
Note: The One Cards of students who are not employed at the university will not work on these printers. Students should use Wepa printing.
Choose the document you would like to print and your document will start to print.
Benefits:
You don’t need to set up or add new printers to your computer.
You’ll be able to print at over 500 printers on the UConn campuses.
Since you authenticate (tap your card or enter NetID) to print, you can have scans sent to your OneDrive. No need to enter an email address manually.
For the University, this system enhances security and confidentiality. It reduces abandoned print jobs, either mistakenly sent to a wrong printer or forgotten, that may contain sensitive information.
We’ll continue to keep you informed as plans progress, and we’ll provide guidance and timelines to support a smooth transition. Our goal is to create a streamlined, secure, and sustainable print environment for the entire University. Please open a Support Request with the Technology Support Center with any questions.
