What is VoIP?
Cisco VoIP phones are replacing 5e phones on all campuses.
VoIP — which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and often pronounced "voyp"— transmits voice telephone calls over a data network.
VoIP services will convert your voice energy into a digital signal that is packetized to travel over the data network. This enables the consolidation of voice and data networks on campus.
What happens when I dial 911 on a VoIP Phones?
Your 911 call will be routed to the appropriate PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) depending upon where you are.
Can I move my phone myself?
Yes, but you must fill out a telephone move request form and provide the new location. this is necessary to update 911 information. You will not be charged for the move, unless a tech is requested to come out to assist with the move. The telephone request for is here https://telecom.uconn.edu/telephone-service-request/
Are voicemail messages accessible through my email?
At this time, you have the option to receive an email to let you know you have a voicemail message. To set this up, open a ticket with ITS.

How are Cisco VoIP phones connected?
Where possible there will be a dedicated network connection for both your phone and computer.
Where this is not possible the existing data network jack in your office will directly connect into your phone and another cable from your phone will be connected to your computer to provide network connectivity for your computer as shown in this link. https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IKB/pages/28192768046
Your VoIP phone will not affect your network speed.
Will my Computer connect to the network if my phone fails?
If your computer is connected through your phone, then it will lose communications if your phone fails (or reboots). You can always plug your computer directly into the wall if this happens until it can be fixed.
Are Auto Attendants available in Cisco Phones?
Yes. Auto Attendant technology, which provides phone tree menus, is available on Cisco phones. Contact ITS for assistance.
Do VoIP phones work during a power outage?
Your VoIP phone will work as long as the UConn data network is up and running. If the power outage causes the network to be down in your area, then your phone will not be able to communicate.
What happens if I get locked out of my voicemail box?
The voicemail system will lock automatically after 3 failed login attempts. It will automatically unlock after 30 minutes.
What types of phones are available for VoIP?
The university offers desk phones that can accommodate up to 4 different lines, 10 different lines (add-on modules available to increase to 28 or more), a single line Wall Phone or Jabber. Jabber is a software version of a phone that can be used anywhere that you are connected to the internet.
Can I get Jabber now?
Yes, jabber is available. You can run Jabber in place of a desk phone or in tandem with a desk phone. Contact the ITS Business Office for costs.
What devices can I run Jabber on?
Jabber can be installed on IOS (iPhone/iPad), Android, Windows and/or MAC computers. Submit a ticket using the Telephone Request Form to get setup for Jabber. https://telecom.uconn.edu/telephone-service-request/
