Deister Key Cabinet - Modifying Access via Genetec

Deister Key Cabinet - Modifying Access via Genetec

Via Genetec, a user with sufficient rights can modify access to keys (referred to as "Assets") within the Deister Key Box.  The steps below will guide you through the modification process.

The following instructions are broken down into two parts:

  1. Determining the Proper Access Rule to Modify

  2. Modifying the Proper Access Rule

If you already know which access rule to modify, skip to part two.

To modify access rules for the Deister key box, you’ll first need to have the Genetec client loaded onto your PC, as well as sufficient rights within the Genetec system.

Determining the Proper Access Rule to Modify

This process is initiated by a ticket submitted through Jira.  This ticket should state whose access to modify, the key box asset they’re requesting, and whether we’ll be adding or removing access.

Example: John Doe needs access to the HBL elevator key.

Note: We’ll reference this example request throughout the entire article

Access in Genetec is governed by “Access Rules”, which are associated with “Assets”.  Based on the above example, the HBL Elevator Key is the requested asset, and we need to add its corresponding access rule to John Doe’s account.

Now, we must identify which access rule is associated with the requested asset.

Removal requests follow the same process unless otherwise noted

Identification Steps

The screenshots contained in these steps feature yellow outlines and arrows to assist with navigating the system menus.

  1. Confirm asset name requested through Jira ticket (example: "HBL Elevator")

  2. Log into Genetec with your credentials and make sure the directory drop down selection is set to "USC-MSB-DIR01", as seen in the below screenshot.

Step 1 - Log in.png
  1. After logging in, you'll see the “Security Desk” menu. To continue, double click the "Tools" option from the left-hand navigation tab.

Note: You can determine which menu you're in via the tabs located within the upper-left corner of the screen.

Step 2 - Select Tools.png
  1. Within the Tools menu, double select the "Config Tool" option.  The Config Tool menu will load, then open in a new window.

Step 3 - Select Config Tool.png
  1. Within this new window, select "Area View".

Step 3.5 - Select Area View.png
  1. Within the left-hand navigation tree, select "Deister proxSafe".

  2. Within the upper-middle bank of tabs, select "Access Rule Assignment".  The center of the screen will now display a list of assets and corresponding access rules tied to the Deister box.

  3. Within this list, locate the requested asset by referencing the middle column labeled "Asset"

  4. Once you locate the requested asset, look to the column to the right labeled "Access Rules" and take note of the corresponding rule label.

Example: Based on the HBL Elevator example from above, we'd look through the middle column and find the "HBL Elevator" entry. We’d then look to the right and see that the corresponding access rule is labeled "NetOps".

Step 4 - Confirm Access Rule.png

By design, many access rules are associated with multiple assets.  For example, in the above screen shot you'll notice "NetOps" is tied to many items within the Deister proxSafe list.  Keep this in mind when evaluating user access needs.

Modifying the Proper Access Rule

Now that we know which access rule corresponds to the requested asset, we're able to go into the user's profile and modify their assigned access rules.

Modification Steps

  1. Navigate back to the “Security Desk” window.

  2. Select "Card Holder Management" by double clicking on the icon.

Step 5 - Select Card Holder Management.png
  1. You'll now see a list of users within the Genetec system. Using the search bar located within the upper-left section of the screen, type either part or all of the requesting user's name.  In the below screen shots, we'll be searching for the user "Richard Dziekan"

Step 6 - Enter Name.png
  1. After entering Richard’s name into the search bar, you'll see their user profile. Double click on the user's name to navigate to their individual profile page.

Step 7 - Select Name.png
  1. Within their profile, click on the "Access Rules" tab, located in the upper-middle bank of tabs.  You'll then see a list of the user's current access rules.

Step 8 - Select Access Rules.png
  1. Within the bottom-left of this menu, you’ll see a small box with a green plus and a red x icon.

    1. The green plus is for adding access.

    2. The red x is for removing access.

Step 9 - Click Green Plus.png

Removing Access

  1. Highlight the appropriate access rule from the left-hand list.

  2. Click the red x icon within the bottom left.

  3. Confirm and save your changes.

Adding Access

  1. Click on the green plus button located at the bottom-left corner of the window to assign a new access rule.  This will open a window displaying all possible access rule assignments.

  2. Select the necessary access rule, then click “Add”.

  3. Click “Save and Close” to finalize the rule assignment.

Example: Based on the HBL Elevator example from before, we'd select "NetOps" within this window, then click "Add", followed by “Save and Close”

Step 10 - Select Rule Save Close.png
  1. The user should be all set with the new rule assignment. Log out of the system and confirm the user can access the needed asset.

Note: It sometimes takes up to 24 hours for access rules to replicate entirely through the system.  If a user isn't able to access the key box right away, give it some time, a day at the most, then repeat this process.
