Automatically Move SharePoint Files

Students, faculty and staff can use Automations within SharePoint to automatically move files that are created or placed in a folder within one Document Library, to another Document Library within the same site.

Creating a new Document Library

  1. From your SharePoint site, navigate to Site Contents on the left-hand navigation menu

  2. Select New-> Document library from the drop-down menu

  3. Select Blank Library and provide a name/description

    1. Checking the Show in site navigation box will cause your new Document Library to be included in the left-hand navigation menu, where Home, Documents, and Site contents are shown above

  4. You can now customize the permissions for this Document Library by navigating to the Settings Gear → Library Settings in the upper-right corner of the site → More library settings → Permissions for this document library

Automatically Moving Files

This process will automatically move files that are uploaded/created/placed in a source folder within one document library, to a destination folder in another document library.

  1. Navigate to the source folder you’d like files to be moved from

  2. Along the top ribbon, select the 3-dot ellipsis Automate → Rules → Create Rule

  3. Choose the A new file is added trigger

  4. Select the move file to option in the drop-down and select your newly-created document library

  5. The rule is automatically enabled and any files created/uploaded/placed into the source folder will now be moved to the Uploaded Files document library a few moments after
