Disaster Recovery Plan for IT Systems and Services

Disaster Recovery Plan for IT Systems and Services

Disaster recovery (DR) is a critical IT operational capability designed to quickly restore and then deliver key services from an alternate location should there be a catastrophic loss of our production facilities on UConn’s Storrs campus.

The University has determined which institutional services are included in DR and designates them as either tier 0 or tier 1 services.

Tier 0 zero services always remain available and are moved to Microsoft Azure. They include:

Tier 1 services support the basic functions of the University, such as purchasing, hiring, delivering coursework, and managing digital identities. Some of these functions are provided by cloud-hosted services (e.g., Microsoft 365 for email and files; Kuali for purchasing; HuskyCT for learning management). In the event of a disaster that impacts the Storrs campus, they are not affected and will continue to operate remotely. The following tier 1 services are hosted in our Storrs data center.

  • NetID site

  • Personal name (pername.uconn.edu)

  • ID system, including account creation

  • Student Administration System

  • Central Web Servers (Aurora)

If we lose our on-campus production facility, these services would be transferred to our DR site in a remote data center. We annually test the transfer of these tier 1 services.

The 2025 test will begin on Sunday, May 18th at 9:00 am and conclude on Wednesday, May 21st. Information about any service disruptions during testing is available on the IT status page: https://itstatus.uconn.edu/
