Standard Configurations for Managed Workstations

Standard Configurations for Managed Workstations

ITS provides standard configurations for Windows PCs that allow you to access the apps and services appropriate for your work. If you have a Windows PC that is supported by ITS, you can choose to customize it to your usage. This article will outline the various configurations available to you.

Available configurations

Single user (default)

This is the default configuration for all Windows computers. It is intended for most use cases where the computer will be assigned to a single employee for primarily their own use. This primary user will be granted device administrator privileges and access to the Company Portal app store to install managed apps. No other users will have admin rights or access to Company Portal.

  • Who can sign in: anyone

  • Who gets admin rights: primary user and anyone who they grant access

Shared use

This is the configuration best used in situations where several people will share a computer. Examples include a front-desk PC that is used by student workers or a specialized print station that requires users to sign in before printing. In this configuration, nobody is an admin by default, but one can be granted by ITS if requested. Everyone has access to Company Portal but will be bound by the limitation of non-admin (standard) privileges.

  • Who can sign in: anyone

  • Who gets admin rights: nobody, unless requested on a per-user basis

Conference room

This is the configuration used by default in the ITS-managed conferencing monitor bundle. This configuration should be used for a PC that will be predominantly used for presentation, video conferencing, and screen sharing. This configuration is not intended for daily productivity. There are no administrators for this configuration. Standard video conferencing applications such as Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex are pre-installed.

  • Who can sign in: anyone

  • Who gets admin rights: nobody

This will provide dependable access to your software and resources while ensuring your device remains patched, secure, and stable. All university computers must be managed according to the System and Application Security Policy.

Next steps

By default, every Windows PC comes set up for single user usage. If this is changed, the change will persist even if the computer is fully erased. If you would like to assign a specific configuration to your PC, please reach out to techsupport@uconn.edu. We will provide guidance and support to get your workflow going.
