Intune & Autopilot: Setting up a Shared Use Device running Windows
This article’s intended audience is University IT technicians who have been provisioned access to UConn’s Microsoft Intune Admin Center.
Shared Use Device Definition: A Windows desktop or laptop that is not assigned to a specific individual and is being used by multiple faculty, staff and/or students.
Ensure the computer is enrolled into Microsoft Windows Autopilot
From this same menu, search to find the computer you want to setup, select it, and click on the link under “Associated Microsoft Entra Device”
Copy the Device ID
Navigate to Groups, search for the appropriate group based on the table below, and select that group.
Navigate to Members>Add Members, and search for the Device ID previously copied. Check off that machine and hit select to add it to the appropriate group.
It’s generally best to fresh start the machine at after adding it to the group at this point if it was previously onboarded into Intune.
Once the device is onboarded into Intune, remove the Primary User and change the management name. This guide has steps for the process.
Effects of adding a device to the Azure Shared Device group:
Give the device the “Shared Device Autopilot” profile
Add the device to the top level policy group “Policy - MW Shared Machine Config“ for shared devices, which will ensure “Windows Hello for Business” is disabled and “Microsoft Office LTSC” is installed instead of “Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise”.
