Setting up Microsoft Authenticator
Microsoft Authenticator is a 2FA solution that is required for some services and systems at UConn. It functions similar to Duo 2FA, which involves with interacting with an app on a secondary device to approve a sign-in request. If you are assigned a Windows computer for work or access certain administrative services (such as those for IT professionals), you may need to set up Microsoft Authenticator.
If you are setting up a Windows computer for the first time, you may be prompted to set up Windows Hello and Microsoft Authenticator. These are the steps to follow if you are stuck at that prompt when logging in.
Recommended: Authenticating with Microsoft Authenticator
Download the Microsoft Authenticator app to your phone. This app is available on the Google Play Store and the App Store.
On your computer, click Next to begin setup.
Follow the instructions on your computer screen until the QR code is visible.
Tap the button on your phone inside the Microsoft Authenticator app, then choose Work or school account. If asked, choose Scan QR Code.
Scan the QR code on your screen.
On your computer, click Next.
Now, you must add either a backup phone number (cell phones and landlines are supported) or email address. The setup wizard will default to a phone number, but you can choose an email option by selecting I want to set up a different method. You should not use your UConn email for this.
Follow the instructions to add your phone number or email address. Depending on the option that you pick, you will either receive an automated phone call, text, or email to verify your identity.
Once the secondary authentication method is verified, your account is set up.
Alternative: Authenticating with a phone call or text
At the initial authentication screen, select I want to set up a different method. Select Phone. Both landlines and cell phones are supported.
Follow the instructions to add your phone number or email address. Depending on the option that you pick, you will either receive an automated phone call or text verify your identity.
Once the secondary authentication method is verified, your account is set up.
