Student Technology Guide: Respondus LockDown Browser
UConn students may be assigned exams that require the use of Respondus LockDown browser: a software that controls your testing environment by blocking access to the internet and other resources on your computer for the duration of the test.
To get started and install Respondus LockDown browser, review the following:
Download and Install Respondus Lockdown Browser
To take an exam using Respondus LockDown Browser, you will need to download and install UConn’s version of the software through HuskyCT. LockDown browser is available on Windows 7 or newer, MacOS 10.10 or newer, and Chromebooks with the Chrome extension.
To download UConn’s version of Respondus Lockdown Browser:
Log into HuskyCT with your NetID and password at huskyct.uconn.edu.
Click on the Institution Page from the left sidebar menu of your browser window.
From the institution page of your HuskyCT, scroll down to the Useful Links for Students section.
Click Download Respondus LockDown browser.
Install the software by following the instructions provided for your operating system (OS) at Downloading and Installing LockDown Browser in HuskyCT.
If your instructor requires Respondus LockDown browser for an exam, you are responsible for taking the exam from a computer that has it installed. If you are unable to download UConn’s version of LockDown browser on your personal computer, loaner laptops that have it pre-installed are available from the Technology Support Center.
Take exams using Respondus Lockdown Browser
While taking an exam in LockDown browser, you are unable to use the internet or other applications, take screenshots, print, copy content to your clipboard, receive notifications, or send messages.
If the exam you are taking is monitored through video and audio recording, you will need to grant the software permission to use your camera and microphone. Before the exam begins, you will be prompted to complete a startup sequence checking that your video and audio is recording properly.
LockDown browser is not required for all exams in HuskyCT - only use it if your instructor specifies it as a requirement.
On the day of your exam, follow these procedures to prevent the loss of valuable test time in the event of a malfunction:
Check for software updates: Check for and install any updates for the LockDown browser software. For instructions, visit: How to Check for Newer Versions and Update LockDown Browser.
Examine your hardware: Confirm that your webcam and microphone are functioning correctly.
Practice the startup sequence: Verify that both your computer and the software are operating properly by practicing the startup sequence: LockDown Browser Startup Sequence Preview.
Academic Misconduct
UConn uses Respondus Lockdown Browser to prevent academic misconduct among students. Academic misconduct is dishonest or unethical academic behavior that includes, but is not limited to, misrepresenting mastery in an academic area (e.g., cheating), failing to properly credit information, research, or ideas to their rightful originators or representing such information, research, or ideas as your own (e.g., plagiarism).
When using Respondus Lockdown Browser, read the startup sequence carefully (if webcam and microphone are required), follow all exam instructions, and do not access any materials or resources unless your instructor specifies otherwise. For more student tips on preventing academic misconduct, visit: Proactive Strategies to Minimize Academic Misconduct.
