Borrowing Laptops and iPads from ITS

Borrowing Laptops and iPads from ITS

UConn students, faculty, and staff can loan university-owned devices from Information Technology Services. The borrower of the device is responsible for the care and security of the device, including loss, theft, and damage, until it is returned to the university. Loans include a device, a charger, and a soft sleeve for laptops or hard case for iPads.

Loaner devices offered by ITS are subject to availability. Due to demand at any given time, ITS may not be able to loan out devices.

Student loan FAQs

Students can borrow a laptop or an iPad from ITS for a short period of time if their computer is being repaired and they need one in the meantime.

Borrowers who do not return ITS-issued equipment on time are subject to receiving a bill for the full cost of replacement of the equipment and accessories.

We have Dell Latitude-series laptops and base model iPads. We do not have MacBooks nor Apple Pencils for the iPads.

Active students whose personal computers are actively being serviced or replaced are eligible. Depending on current inventory, you may be asked to prove the need to loan a computer. ITS staff may deny a loan for any reason.

The loan period is 1 week for laptops and 2 weeks for iPads.

The ITS loaner program is designed only for short-term loans. Students are expected to provide their own personal laptop to supplement their studies.

Students may be able to request one extension of their loan. You will need to demonstrate need (e.g. communications with a repair shop indicating your device is still being repaired, order receipt of a new device, etc.). Depending on current stock, ITS may not be able to extend your loan.

If you believe that you are experiencing extenuating circumstances that prevents you from obtaining your own laptop, you should reach out to the Dean of Students.

When you borrow a device from ITS, you will receive a confirmation email with its due date. If you do not return a device to ITS on time, you will risk receiving an invoice for the full cost of replacement. You will also have a hold placed on your Student Administration System account.

If your device is not returned on time, it may also be remotely locked or erased. When locked, the data stored locally will become unreadable and unrecoverable.

Yes. The laptops come with a web browser, the Microsoft 365 suite, and LockDown Browser. You can install additional apps as needed.

No. All laptops are due back to ITS at the end of each semester without exception. If you are taking a winter or summer session class, you may request another loaner after the start of that class. You may be asked to prove enrollment for the winter or summer session

Any device and accompanying accessories that are not returned in the same condition as initially issued is subject to a full replacement or repair charge. This charge will be determined by ITS staff. This charge will be assessed separately from the student fee bill, but a hold will be placed on your account until the charge is paid.

No. These laptops are strictly for academic use only. Research computing must be completed on dedicated equipment issued by your department. These laptops are not able to connect to Secured Research Infrastructure (SRI).

Generally yes, you can loan from any campus. However it is best to loan from your primary campus as you will need to return it to the campus you loaned from originally.

No. Our Dell computers are encrypted with BitLocker technology, which prevents other users from accessing your data without your credentials. Regardless, all loaner devices are erased before they are re-issued to a new user.

Faculty and staff loan options

Exam iPads

Instructors can borrow up to 6 iPads from ITS for use when administering an exam. These iPads are restricted to Safari and LockDown Browser and automatically connect to UCONN-SECURE. These iPads are intended as backups for students whose computers run into issues last minute.

You can pick up the iPads up to 2 days before the exam starts, but can create a request any time here.

Laptops and iPads for individual use

Employees are expected to have a computer issued by their department. If your device is being repaired by ITS or is being shipped out for repair, you can borrow a Dell laptop for the duration of your repair. Other situations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Laptops for international travel

Travel to certain counties of concern to the Export Control office are required to use a travel laptop. It is a best practice for all other international travel. If you are traveling to a country that has restrictions on web traffic that is necessary for your work, ITS cannot assist with bypassing those with a VPN or other means.

  1. A clean data environment where only the data necessary for the trip is loaded on a cleanly imaged device limits the potential data exposure risk. User laptops naturally accumulate data; ensuring that none of it is subject to law, regulation, contractually obligation or export control is a heavy lift. A clean laptop allows for a limiting of the data that travels beyond the US.

  2. Loaner laptops are centrally managed and subject to default configuration policy including encryption, patching, defender, remote management, and remote wipe features. Regular user laptops may or may not meet all the requirements.

  3. Loaner laptops are reset upon return after each use (once user data is copied off). This limits the potential exposure to the UConn computing environment to anything that the laptop may have acquired while abroad.

  4. UConn Data Classification Policy and UConn Data Roles and Responsibility Policy place a large amount of the responsibility for protection of University data on individual data stewards and device owners. Faculty and staff are ultimately responsible for assessing the implications of policy, law, regulation, and contractual obligations related to their device(s), roles, and the associated data present on assigned University devices. Generally, Information Security (ISO) and Export Control are empowered to apply and enforce requirements where the risk and need arise (with the caveat that travel to specific regions of concern requires strict adherence to ISO and Export Control directives).

Security Policies

Laptops for adjunct faculty (regional campuses only)

ITS will loan university-owned laptops to adjunct faculty of regional campuses who are working with institutional data/student data. The university-issued laptops are enrolled in a device management platform, which ensures that they have up-to-date security and comply with university policies. If they are lost, stolen, or compromised, ITS can remotely manage the issue and minimize data exposure.

The borrower of the device is responsible for the care and security of the device and associated equipment (charger, case, etc.), including loss, theft, and damage, until it is returned to the University. Laptops are loaned by ITS on a semester-by-semester basis and must be returned at the end of each semester.

Laptops for graduate and teaching assistants

ITS will loan university-owned laptops to Graduate Assistants/TAs working with institutional data/student data.
