IT Professionals: Installing the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console on Windows Workstations

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) is a systems management software product developed by Microsoft for managing large groups of computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system. 

IT professionals can automatically (preferred) or manually install the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Management Console on a computer running Microsoft Windows.

Automated Installation via Software Center (Preferred)

Your NetID (for student workers, their NetIDwork or student#### account) must be a member of the Active Directory group ConfigMgr_DEPLOY_Microsoft_Configuration_Manager_Console for the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console to be available in Software Center.

  1. Log onto Windows with your NetID credentials.

    1. For student workers: use your NetIDwork or student#### account credentials. 

  2. To open Software Center from the Start menu, type "Software Center" in the search bar.

      1. Click Start.

      2. Click Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

      3. Select Software Center

  3. In Software Center, choose Applications in the left-hand column.

  4. Select Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console in the right-hand pane.

  5. On the next screen, click Install.

Manual Installation

Your NetIDadmin account must be a member of the Active Directory group ConfigMgr_CONSOLE_DSL_Access to access the installation media. 

  1. Map the network location \\configmgr_dsl.grove.ad.uconn.edu\console with your NetIDadmin account. 

    1. Open This PC.

    2. Type "This PC" in the Start menu's search bar.

    3. Click Map Network Drive. 

  2. Specify a drive letter.

  3. For Folder, enter \\configmgr_dsl.grove.ad.uconn.edu\console.

  4. Uncheck the Reconnect at sign-in box.

  5. Check the Connect using different credentials box.

  6. Click Finish.

  7. Enter your NetIDadmin account and password.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Right-click on ConsoleSetup.exe.

  10. Select Run as Administrator.

  11. Click Run on the security alert.

  12. Click Yes on the User Account Control window.

  13. Click Next in the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager setup wizard.

  14. In the Site Server Name (FQDN) field, enter configmgr_ss.grove.ad.uconn.edu.

  15. Click Next.

  16. Click Next for the installation folder. 

  17. Click Install. 

  18. Ensure Start the Configuration Manager console after you close the Setup Wizard is unchecked.

  19. Click Finish.

Creating a Desktop Shortcut to Authenticate as a Different User 

The Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console, by default, automatically authenticates using the credentials that were used to sign on to Windows. If the credentials with access to Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console differ, you will need to authenticate as a different user. 

  1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop. A menu will appear. 

  2. Select New.

  3. Click Shortcut.

  4. Copy the following path:
    C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:NetIDadmin@UCONN "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminConsole\bin\Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe"

  5. Paste the line you copied into the Type the location of the item field.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Replace NetIDadmin (located in the path you copied for Step 4) with the username provisioned access to Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console.

  8. Enter Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console in the Type a name for this shortcut field.

  9. Click Finish.

  10. Right-click on the new desktop shortcut.

  11. Click Properties.

  12. Select Change Icon...

  13. Click OK on the change icon dialog box.

  14. Copy the following path:
    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminConsole\bin\Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.exe

  15. Paste the path you copied in the Look for icons in this file field.

  16. Press Enter to load the .exe file.

  17. Select the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console icon from the Select an icon from the list below field. 

  18. Click OK.

  19. Click Apply.

  20. Double-click the desktop shortcut to launch Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console.

  21. When prompted to do so, enter your NetIDadmin password.

Pin Application to Taskbar 

It is recommended that you pin the Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Console to your taskbar for quick access. 

  1. To locate Configuration Manager Console in the Start menu, enter “Configuration Manager Console” in the search bar. Alternatively,

    1. Navigate to the Start menu.

    2. Click on Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

    3. Select Configuration Manager Console. 

  2. Right-click on Configuration Manager Console.

  3. Click Pin to Taskbar.
