Compressing and Extracting Files in Windows

Compressing files, folders, and programs decreases their size and reduces the total amount of space they use on your drives or removable storage devices. This is helpful for storage. You need to extract the files from compression to make them usable.

Compressing a File

  1. Browse to find the file you wish to compress.

  2. Right-click on the file.

  3. Select Send To from the menu that appears.

  4. Select Compressed (zipped) folder from the list of options to create a compressed folder with the same name as your file and in the same location. The folder contains your compressed file.

Extracting a File

  1. Right-click on the compressed file or folder.

  2. Select Extract All from the menu that appears.

  3. Select the location to which you intend to extract the files. By default, the location is set to your current location.

  4. Click the Extract button.
