There are certain technological limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint. Note that unless stated, the limit applies to both OneDrive and SharePoint.

Storage Limits

OneDrive - 1TB
SharePoint - 25TB across 30 million files.

File Size and Path

250 GB - File upload limit. Applies to each individual file uploaded to Microsoft Teams Files tab, SharePoint document libraries, and OneDrive folders.

The entire decoded file path, including the file name, can't contain more than 400 characters. Learn more: OneDrive - File Path Limit or SharePoint - File Path Limit

Moving and Copying files

  • No more than 100 GB total file size

  • No more than 30,000 files

  • Each file must be less than 15 GB

If you need to conduct a transfer larger than this, you will need to use File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS). Please reach out to techsupport@uconn.edu if you need help or have questions.

OneDrive App - Sync

OneDrive has a “soft limit” of 300,000 items. This means sync tasks of more than 300,000 files will work, but will greatly slow down the application and possibly cause it to crash.

Overall site metadata

1000 GB per site (metadata rarely reaches this size). Metadata is data about data. This includes author, creation date, etc.

Version History

There is a limit of 50,000 versions total for a SharePoint site. This includes the Version History of every file on the site.

Learn more: Version History for Files in OneDrive or Version History for Files in SharePoint

Groups

A user can belong to 5,000 groups per site (site collection), and each group can have up to 5,000 users. You can have up to 10,000 groups per site.

Viewing files in a web browser

While viewing a folder in your web browser, the page will only load 5,000 items.
