In order to connect an Internet of Things (IoT) device to the UConn network, you must register your device by providing the device's MAC address. Every network-connected device has an IP address and a unique MAC address that identifies it on the network. This article covers how to find the MAC address on devices commonly registered with ITS.
Gaming Consoles
Playstation 3
- At the home menu, go left to select Settings, and then choose Network Settings
- Select Settings and Connection Status List.
- Scroll to the bottom area to find the MAC Address.
Playstation 4
- Select Settings on the home screen.
- Scroll down to System.
- Select System Information.
- The wired and wireless MAC Addresses are listed at the bottom of the screen.
Xbox 360
- Go to the home screen.
- Choose System Settings at the far right of the home screen.
- Choose Network Settings.
- Select Wireless Network.
- Select Configure Network.
- Select Additional Settings.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- The Wireless MAC Address should be listed in the middle area.
Xbox unsafe-One
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Select System > Settings > General > Network settings.
- Choose Advanced Settings.
- At the bottom of this screen, there are headings for Wired MAC and Wireless MAC Addresses.
- To connect to the UCONN-GUEST network, give the Wireless MAC Address to the ITS Tech Support Center.
Nintendo Switch
- Select System Settings from the home screen.
- Select Internet.
- Your System MAC Address should be displayed on this screen. If the System MAC Address is not displayed on this screen, select Internet Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom and note the System MAC Address.
Mobile Devices
Android Device
- Go to Settings on the Apps Menu Screen.
Select About (device).
- Select Status.
- The device's MAC address is located under WiFi MAC Address.
Windows Phone
- Open the Apps list, and tap on Settings.
- Select About.
- Tap on More Info. You will now be able to see the MAC Address (as well as the IMEI and SIM ID) of your Windows phone.
iOS Device
- On the home screen, open Settings by finding and tapping the gear icon.
Click General.
- Select the About tab.
Find the Wi-Fi Address listing at the bottom. This is the MAC Address of the device.
Computers
Windows Computer
- Press the Windows key and R to open the Run window
- Type cmd to open the Command Window
- type ipconfig /all to list all of your network adapters (wired and wireless)
OSX Device
Finding the Wired MAC Address
Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen and type in Network Utility.
Select Network Utility from the drop-down menu.
- To determine the Wired MAC Address, select Ethernet from the network interface drop-down menu.
- The device’s MAC Address will be listed under Hardware Address.
Finding the Wireless MAC Address
Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen and type in Network Utility.
Select Network Utility from the drop-down menu.
To determine the Wireless MAC Address, select AirPort (or Wi-Fi for OSX 10.7 and above) from the network interface drop-down menu.
The device’s MAC Address will be listed under Hardware Address.
Smart Devices
Google Home
- Plug in your Google Home.
- Download and open the Google Home app on your phone or tablet.
- Select your Google Home from the list of nearby devices, and press Set Up.
- Accept the prompt to allow your phone to connect to Google Home.
- Enter the location of your Google Home, and press Continue.
- The wireless MAC Address will be listed at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Google Home Mini
- Plug in your Google Home Mini.
- Download and open the Google Home app on your phone or tablet.
- Select your Google Home from the list of nearby devices and press Set up.
- When the setup asks what Wi-Fi name to connect to, press the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner. This will display the Mac Address.
Amazon Echo (Dot, Spot, Plus, Show)
- Download the Amazon Alexa app to your phone or computer and sign in with your Amazon account.
- Connect to the network transmitted by the Echo device.
- The Wireless MAC Address for the Echo will be listed at the bottom of the Echo setup screen in the Alexa app.
Amazon Fire TV
- Plug the Amazon Fire TV stick into your TV.
- If this is your first time using this device, the Wireless MAC Address will be shown on the far-right side of the available networks list.
- If this device has been used in the past, navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network, and the Wired and Wireless MAC Addresses will be displayed.
Apple TV
- Plug in your Apple TV and follow the setup until you reach the step to connect to a network.
- Select ISUNet-StartHere and attempt to connect. This will fail, which is normal.
- The Wireless MAC Address will display on the screen.
Roku Stick
Using your Roku remote, access the Secret Menu.
- Press [Home] 5 times.
- Press [Fast Forward] 3 times.
- Press [Rewind] 2 times.
- Your MAC Address will be displayed as a Wireless MAC Address.
Smart TVs
Samsung
To locate your Samsung Smart TV MAC Address, navigate to the Network settings.
- Press Menu.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Network. Then press ENTER.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Network Settings. Then press ENTER.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Wireless. then press ENTER.
Insignia
To locate your Insignia Smart TV MAC Address, navigate to the Network settings.
- Press ENTER, or press Menu.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Network. Then press ENTER.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Wireless. Then press ENTER.
Sharp
To locate your Sharp Smart TV MAC Address, navigate to the Network settings.
- Press Menu on the remote.
- Press ◀ or ▶ to highlight Initial Setup. Then press Enter.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to select Internet Setup. Then press Enter.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to select Network Setup. Then press Enter.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to select Connection Type. Then press Enter.
- Press ◀ or ▶ to highlight Wireless. Then press Enter.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to select IP Setup. Then press Enter. The MAC Address should be at the bottom of the page.
Sony
To locate your Sony Smart TV MAC address, navigate to the Network settings.
- Press Home.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll to Settings. Then press Enter.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll to Network Setup. Then press Enter.
- From the menu, select Wireless Setup. Then press Enter.
- Click on Network Setup - Status, and the MAC Address should appear.
Vizio
To locate your Vizio Smart TV MAC addresses, navigate to the Network settings.
- Press Menu on the remote.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight the Network. Then press OK. The Network Connection menu will display.
- Press ▲ or ▼ to highlight Manual Setup. Then press OK. The IP Settings menu will display.
- Scroll to the bottom to find the MAC Addresses.
LG
To locate your LG Smart TV MAC Addresses, navigate to the Network settings.
TVs Before 2012:
- Press the Home.
- Press Settings. Then press Network.
- Press Network Settings. The MAC Address will be listed after it runs a network test.
2012 and After:
- Press Settings on the remote.
- Choose Support (the ? icon) and then Product / Service Info. The MAC Address will be listed in the Product / Service infobox.
