Student, staff, and faculty can change their user password in macOS / OS X. 

If your computer is bound to Active Directory, navigate to the NetID Management website to change your password. However, doing so will NOT change the password on your Mac. 

If your computer is managed by ITS using JAMF and is configured to use your NetID to login, navigate to the NetID Management website to change your password. However, doing so will NOT change the password on your Mac. 

In both of the above situations, after you have changed your NetID password, you need to log into your computer using your old password, and then use the instructions below to update the password locally on your computer.

Changing a Local User Password in macOS / OS X

  1. Click the Apple icon on the upper left corner.
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. Click Users & Groups in the System Preferences.
  4. Select the user account for which you wish to add or change the password. 
  5. Click on the lock to make changes.
  6. Click Change Password.



  • To change an existing password, enter the old password followed by the new password twice.
  • To create a new password, leave the old password field blank followed by the new password twice.


  1. Click Change Password once all of the relevant fields are completed.
