Wired connections are present when machines are directly connected to a building's data jack via an Ethernet cable. Nearly all University-supported desktops and docked laptops have a wired connectionDesktop computers have built-in Ethernet ports and other devices can interface with Ethernet with a USB adapter.

Requesting a network reservation

ITS can assign a static IP and/or a hostname to a wired network device if it is required for its functionality. VLAN configurations, firewall rules, and other network policies can be set to allow the device to operate properly and securely. Department printers are an example of devices that require a hostname and VLAN configuration to function on the UConn network. If you need a static IP reservation or a hostname for a wired device, contact the ITS Technology Support Center.

Info

Wired connections are most frequently given 137.99.###.### or 10.16.###.### IP ranges, which gives the computer access to UConn systems that may otherwise require a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

If you need to connect an IoT device (e.g., game console) that doesn’t support wired connections to Wi-Fi, you can register your device and connect to UCONN-GUEST. See Registering Wireless Devices for Internet Access.
