Read&Write is an easy-to-use toolbar that makes documents, files, and webpages accessible. The software offers a variety of features, like reading out loud, built-in dictionaries, summary highlighters, and turning text into audio files(R&W) is a customizable toolbar that integrates reading, writing, studying, and research support tools with common applications. Features include Text To Speech with Dual Synchronized Highlighting, Word Prediction, Talking Dictionary, Picture Dictionary, Vocabulary Tool, Study Skills tools to capture highlights and OCR capabilities. The software is available to all UConn students, staff, and faculty through a site license provided by the Center for Students with Disabilities.

  • Create study guides through its color-coded highlighting feature

Installing Read&Write

  1. Navigate to the Read&Write product page.

  2. Scroll down to and click Try Read&Write Today. 

  3. Fill out the Free Trial Form with your First and Last Name

  4. Work Email Address: be sure to type your @uconn.edu email address. By using this, you will get the FULL ACCESS (not a free trial) to all the icons on the Read&Write toolbar

  5. Job Role: select Non-Budget holder

  6. I am …: Make appropriate selection. For example, if you are a student, select “a student”

  7. Tell us why you’re trialing: Type “this is an assistive technology tool that was recommended by my university”

  8. When all fields are filled out, choose Start Free Trial

  9. Choose the appropriate operating system (Windows or Mac) for the device on which you are downloading Read&Write. Select the  Read&Write (US English) option.

  10. Follow the on-screen prompts for the installation.

  11. Log in with your UConn Microsoft email and password once Read&Write has been installed. . You will get FULL ACCESS to Read&Write by using this, not just a free trial.
