This article outlines the two methods for UConn Instructors to convert their HuskyCT “Original” courses to “Ultra.”

Overview

Ultra Conversion is for upcoming courses only. Original courses from the current or previous academic terms will remain unaltered in their “Original” state layout and instructors will continue to have access to them indefinitely.

There are 2 approaches that instructors can take when converting a previous term’s Original course (i.e., Fall 2023) into an upcoming Ultra course (i.e., Fall 2024).

  1. Bulk conversionConversion: This will copy and convert everything in the Original course, including all content, files, and assessments videos, assessments and grade center columns into the upcoming Ultra course.

  2. Manual rebuild: This requires instructors to rebuild the basic organizational structure in a blank Ultra course, then easily populate modules/folders Copy Content: Using this method, instructors will populate their Ultra course by selecting and copying course modules/folders/items from the Original version.

Each instructor should select the conversion method that is optimal for their individual courses, instructional context, and needs. Regardless of conversion method, it is highly recommended that a comprehensive side-by-side review of the Original and Ultra courses is performed post-conversion.

Method 1: Bulk Conversion

Overview

This method copies and converts all course content, files, links, materials, folders, tools, discussions, assessments, and Grade Center columns from an Original course version into a new Ultra version.

  • If your Original course has a simple design and does not contain a wide variety of tools, (ie, there are only folders, files, and assignments) - Bulk Conversion may be the easiest option for you.

  • It’s important to be aware, this process also copies over unused course items including un-deployed tests, question pools, hidden grade center columns, archived pandemic-era content, etc. Unused content creates clutter and confusion for instructors and students. If you would prefer not to copy over old unused content/materials, and copy the content more selectively, we recommend using Method 2.

🛑 Bulk conversion will likely copy convert course items in a manner which requires varying degrees of clean-up and/or reorganization. There could potentially be course items or test questions which are missing or broken and may need to be re-added. We recommend fully reviewing all course items, assessment settings, and test questions. If you encounter problematic items that are not deletable or that give you error messages, please notify email huskyct@uconn.edu.

To request a Bulk Conversion to Ultra, complete this online request form.

  • In the Source Course - list the Original course details

Overview

This method is much easier than the name suggests. Using this method, Instructors will copy over entire folders/modules or selected course items from the Original version into their blank Ultra course.

Step 1: Decide the Organizational Structure

  1. With the Manual Rebuild method, a good starting point is to decide the organizational folder/module structure for your course in the Ultra course.

    1. In Original, the organizational structure of courses was built into the left side menu, with Course Content commonly containing most or all of the content organization within.

    2. In Ultra, “Course Content” is now the main page, and Learning modules and folders are added to that.

    3. If all of the content in your original course was contained within Course Content without additional folders structure, you can replicate this structure.

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how instructors can copy content themselves from one HuskyCT course to another. In many cases, this is the preferred method for converting courses from Original Course View to Ultra Course View because it allows instructors to develop a course structure and organizational layout that works well in Ultra Course View. A bulk conversion may create a course structure/organization that is not well-suited for the new Ultra Course View layout, and might require some reorganization of content. Copying smaller sections of a previous Original Course View course into an upcoming Ultra Course View course, such as learning modules, folders, or even individual items, allows instructors to develop their new course layout.
