BARC Virtual Machines that do not need to be accessed over the Internet are typically assigned a private IP address. A private address provides an additional layer of security and reduces the number of public IP addresses in use (which are limited). A private IP address requires the use of a proxy for Internet access. 

An IP address in the range of 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 is a private address and will require a proxy for Internet access.

  1. Click the Tools button or gear icon
    Click Internet Options
    Select the Connections tab
    Click the LAN settings button
    Check the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox
    Enter the following proxy server on the Start menu and Type in "Proxy"

  2. Select "Proxy Settings"

  3. Scroll down to "Manual proxy Setup"

  4. Select the "Use a proxy server" switch to ensure it's "On"
  5. Enter in the address field: user-proxy.business.uconn.eduEnter your NetID and password if prompted
  6. Click OK on the dialog boxes
