Students, staff, and faculty Users can compress files, folders, and programs to decrease file sizes and reduce the amount of space that files take up on computers or removable storage devices.
Compressed files are ideal for storage or transfer of the files in the context of limited storage space or internet bandwidth. In general, it is usually not possible to work with compressed files in other programs. The need to be uncompressed first.
Browse to find the file or folder you wish to compress.
Hold down the Control key on the keyboard.
Click on the file or folder item.
On macOS version 10.9 or later, select the Compress [name of file or folder] optionRight-click on the file/folder and select Compress <name of file or folder>. Doing so will create a .zip file with the name of the file or folder that was compressed.
Double-click on the .zip file to decompress it.
