This article outlines how to Students can set up a television on University of Connecticut campus. This article is also relevant if you are connecting a TVs off campus to a TV service provided directly through a Coax TV jack.
Connecting a TV to the Wall Jack
To properly setup a TV, you need to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to the back of the TV. The two connection points are illustrated below.

In some residence halls, there are two TV coax jacks. In this case, use the jack that is not on the same faceplate as a phone or data jack connection. Each room only has ONE active TV jack. If you would like to connect multiple TV’s in one room, you will need to purchase a TV coax splitter, as seen below. |
For a splitter, the top “Input” connection connects to the wall jack (through a coaxial TV cable), and the bottom has two “Output” connections that can connect to two televisions.
Once a TV is properly connected, turn on your TV and select the TV input and see if any channels can be seen.
TV Can’t See Channels
It is normal to connect your TV and see no channels or very few channels. You must ensure the TV has been appropriately configured and you have scanned for available channels.
Verify that your TV is set to cable
Depending on the type and model of the TV, you will need to go into the MENU and find either a SETUP or CHANNELS section (This is different for every TV but each one should have a variation of these settings in it).
In this menu, you need to have sure that the TV input is set on CABLE and not ANT (Antenna). This would be selected if you were connecting a standard rabbit-ears antenna into the TV.
Scanning for TV Channels
The next step is to perform a channel scan on the TV. This will force the TV to scan all available channels accessible through the TV provider and make them viewable on the TV.
When the channel scan is being performed, it should look similar to the following:
Follow the instructions below to scan for channels for specific models. This will find HD and non-HD channels.
HD and Digital Channels
In UConn’s HuskyVision service, they offer a few HD channels that can be picked up on campus. For HD channels to work, you need to have an HD-ready TV. They cannot be viewed on the older CRT TVs.
In digital television (HD), channels can be represented in the format 81.1. For HuskyVision, the HD channels are located in channels 81.1-86.1. This means that channel 81 can have multiple sub-channels, such as 81.1, 81.2, and 81.3. These are 3 separate channels that are all located under the 81 channel.
Adding HD Channels to VIZIO
- With your VIZIO remote, make sure you have the TV input selected and press the input button.
- Press the MENU button, and the TV’s menu should appear. Using the arrow keys (the keys surrounding the OK, Menu or Logo button on the remote) navigate until you find the TV TUNER MENU.
- Use the arrow keys to highlight Tuner Mode, which should be the first option on the menu. Select cable (for any cable or coaxial connection).
- Once the option is highlighted, you should be able to change it using the arrows.
Once you confirm that the Tuner Mode is set correctly, highlight the Auto Search option, press the right arrow and your TV will scan for all available channels. Let it finish completely. The scan usually takes 5-10 minutes. - Once the scan is complete, you should be able to surf channels normally with the HD channels available as well.
Adding HD Channels to Samsung
- Open the TV’s menu and select Channel Setup or Channels.
- Select the Auto Store or Automatic Scan option by scrolling with the channel buttons. Press the Enter button to begin the scan. The TV will scan for all available channels including HD.
- Once complete, the HD channels should be available.
Adding HD Channels to Westinghouse
- Find the model number of your TV. It should be on the back of your TV set. One tuner should work and the other shouldn’t.
- There are two tuners: QAM and ATSC.
- QAM – The one that UConn supports.
- QAM is used strictly for digital cable. However, it isn’t mandated so TV manufacturers have the option of using it or leaving it out. So one has to check to see if their specific TV set has the proper tuner.
- ATSC – Not supported by UConn, as it doesn’t use digital.
- If you don’t have the QAM tuner, they could either return the TV set for one that has the correct tuner or get the digital adapter.
- If you have the correct tuner, go to the menu on the TV set and choose Cable/Antenna set up. Select which one you are using.
- After making the correct selection, there should be a menu function for channel auto-scan.
- Select Auto-Scan, which will send the set into auto channel mode.
- This could take up to 30 minutes.
- Once completed, the auto-scan message goes away and the HD channels should be present.
Adding HD Channels to LG
- Press Menu on the remote control/TV set.
- Select Setup on the menu and press OK.
- Select Auto-Tuning and press OK.
- Select Start and then press OK.
- The television will begin to search all available bands for channels. You don’t have to choose if you are using cable or antenna because the TV searches for both OTA analog and digital signals.
Adding HD Channels to Sony
- Press Menu on the remote control/TV set.
- Select Setup on the menu and press OK.
- Press ENTER and you should see an option to scan the available channels for cable.
- Select Start and then press OK.
- Once completed, the HD channels should be present.
Other Manufacturers
- Press Menu on the TV screen. Multiple tabs should appear.
- Go to Setup or Settings.
- There should be an option called Channels (Other TV sets might say “System”)
- Go to Scan Channels. (Other TV sets might say Program Channels, Autoscan, Autoprogram, or Autotuning.)
- Press either Select, Enter or OK to start the scan.

HuskyVision has been discontinued in student rooms of residence halls, suites, and apartments as of the Fall 2023 semester. The service will remain available at this time for departments that use it in administrative and academic buildings. For television service in your room, we recommend that students bring a smart TV or streaming (e.g., Roku, Fire TV Stick) and subscribe to a commercial streaming service(s) of their choice. |
Requirements
To set up HuskyVision, you will need:
A cable-ready TV. If the TV is not cable ready you will need a cable-ready DVD/media device.
A coaxial cable to connect the TV to the HuskyVision faceplate (the face-plate with only a coax outlet).
Setting up one TV
After your TV is set up, you can scan for available channels.
Connect the coaxial cable to the HuskyVision faceplate (the faceplate with only one coaxial connection) and the input jack on your cable-ready TV or DVD/media device. If a DVD/media device is being used, connect a second coaxial cable from the DVD/media device to your TV.
Check to make sure the TV and/or DVD/media device is set to the appropriate mode(s) to receive cable. For most TVs, you can set the mode to either Cable or TV.
Auto-program your TV and/or DVD/media device for the available HuskyVision channels.
Enter the on-screen menu for the TV and/or DVD/media device by selecting Setup or Menu on the device’s remote control or the device itself.
Navigate to and run your TV's Auto-program/Channel Search feature.
Your TV should now be able to receive cable.
Setting Up Multiple TVs
Connecting multiple TVs in one room requires a TV coaxial splitter, as seen below.

On a coaxial splitter, the top input connection connects to the wall jack through a coaxial TV cable. The bottom has two output connections that can connect to two televisions via coaxial cables. Once you have connected the two output connections to the two TVs you intend to set up, you can then follow the above steps for Setting Up One TV.
