Gratis appointments are courtesy appointments which acknowledge those for individuals who provide services to the University at no pay. These appointments carry neither the rights of collective bargaining agreements nor the benefits and privileges of the University’s ByLaws. For the purpose of regularizing gratis appointments and to validate that these professionals are acting under the University’s auspicespolicies and procedures, departments must complete an appointment letter and route it in the usual manner with the required signatures (department head, employee → submitted into CORE as a gratis hire transaction). These appointments carry neither the rights of collective bargaining agreements nor the benefits and privileges of the University’s By-Lawsallow access to University systems, the library, buildings, as well as a netID.

Why may someone choose to be hired as gratis?

  • Existing students, faculty, or staff may wish to be hired as a gratis employee to retain their net ID and email access, and access to University systems.

  • Volunteer work

  • Participation in lab work

  • Continued access to funding if retired/separated faculty member

How to Hire:

  • Background checks can be completed here https://hr.uconn.edu/gratisvolunteer-appointment-form/ although it is not common given these are generally former UConn employees.

  • Issue an offer letter found on HR’s site https://hr.uconn.edu/offer-letters/

    • 2 Types: Adjunct or regular SPAR gratis

    • These are typically in one-year intervals and must be reappointed after end of appointment

      • Appointments cannot be longer than one year at a time
