titleWhat if I would prefer to move the data myself?

If you would prefer to move the data yourself, please fill out the Google Migration Opt-Out form to let ITS know they do not need to migrate your Drive.
Failure to fill out the form will result in duplicate data in your OneDrive.

titleWhat's happening to Shared Drives?

The data in Shared Drives will be migrated to the OneDrive of the Shared Drive’s creator.

From there, you can move or copy the data to SharePoint (for departmental data), or re-share it from your OneDrive (for personal data). For more information about OneDrive vs. SharePoint, see: Comparing File Storage at UConn

titleWhat happens to my course content in HuskyCT (Blackboard)?

If you have links in your course(s) to files in Google Drive, you will need to recreate the links in your course(s) after your files are moved to OneDrive.

titleWhy can't I poke at my "GDrive" folder before the migration is done?

Any alterations to the “GDrive” folder or its contents before receiving the “all clear” from ITS will result in a mismatch between Google Drive and OneDrive and cause subsequent migrations of your files to fail. This will also slow down other ongoing migrations.

Please read “What is the full migration process?” above for more context.

titleWhat files will not be migrated?

ITS can only migrate files in your Google Drive, and with some limitations:

  • Google Photos cannot be migrated, as they are not stored in Google Drive

  • Files over 15 GB cannot be migrated automatically and must be moved manually

  • Shortcuts to other files will not be migrated

Expand
titleWhy would something fail to migrate?

A file may fail to migrate for any of the following reasons:

  • File size: We can only migrate files under 15 GB

  • File location: Files saved outside of your Google Drive (e.g., images in Google Photos) aren’t reachable by our migration tool

  • File/folder path length: OneDrive and SharePoint can only hold file paths up to 400 characters, while Google Drive allows for much longer path names

  • Scan results: Unusual file types can be identified by our scan as potential malware and not moved automatically as a preventative measure

  • Permissions issues: If a file is shared with you but you do not own it, it will only migrate to the OneDrive of its owner, who will need to re-share it with you.

titleWill sharing/permissions migrate?

No; if you had shared a document in Google Drive, you will need to re-share it from Microsoft after the migration is complete.

titleWill hyperlinks still work after migrating a file?

Most hyperlinks will still work after the file is migrated, depending on the type of link:

  • Links within a document:

    • If a document has a link to another location in the document (e.g., a hyperlinked Table of Contents), those links will still work after migrating.

  • Links to outside resources:

    • Hyperlinks to something outside of a document (e.g., a hyperlink to www.uconn.edu) will still work after migrating

  • Links to other documents being migrated:

    • Hyperlinks to other documents in a UConn Google Drive will not work after migrating. These links will need to be updated with links to the files' new Microsoft locations.
