Using the free and open-source software VLC Media Player (https://www.videolan.org/), you can encode an existing caption file into a video. By encoding the captions within the video file, the file can be shared and played back with captions. Note |
---|
You must be the owner of the video to download the .srt caption file(s). Both the video and caption file are needed to complete this process. |
Download the video file by following the instructions for Downloading Video Files from Kaltura. After you have downloaded the video file, go back to the edit screen for the video. Click the Captions tab. If the video has existing captions you will see a file listed. Click the Download icon under the“Actions” heading in the table. Download the VLC Media Player if you don’t already have it installed. Go to https://www.videolan.org/ and click Download VLC. You will be directed to a new page. Do not click any of the ad links on the page. Wait a few seconds and the download will start. Run the downloaded installer by clicking the file at the bottom of the screen or clicking Run when prompted.
Open VLC. In VLC, go to the menu bar at the top of the window. Click Media > Convert/Save. In the window that opens, click Add and find the video file you downloaded. Then, check the box for Use a subtitle file and click Browse to find the .srt file that you downloaded from Kaltura. Click Convert/Save. In the new window that opens, click the Profile drop-down and select the Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) profile. Click the Wrench icon next to the profile to bring up the profile settings. Select the Audio Codec tab. Check the box for Keep original audio track. Select the Subtitles tab. Check the boxes for Subtitles and Overlay subtitles on the video. Click Save. The profile editor window will close. UndertheDestination section, click Browse to choose a name for the new subtitled video to be saved as. Click Start. The VLC window will appear as if it is playing media and say“Converting [file name]” at the top. Wait for this to finish. Once the conversion has finished, go to the destination file that you chose before the conversion process to find the subtitled video.
