When users submit a request for desktop support, the technician typically asks for the computer name. Our directory uses this information to index machines, remote into machines, and keep track of inventory. It also enables us to better help users.

Finding the Computer Name for a PC
You can find the computer name in the information about the operating system or by looking on the computer.

From Within the Operating System
Windows 10
Right click on the Start Menu and open Settings
Select System
Scroll down to About
The Service Tag will be identified under Device name.
Windows 10 (If not logged on)
From a login screen type “.\” in the username field. The computer name will be displayed. For ITS-supported Dell computers the service tag is the same as the computer name.
From the Outside of the Device
On desktops, the black tag is on top of the machine. On small, form-factor machines and laptops, it is located on the back of the device.

Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner.
Select About This Mac. The serial number is the last field.
From the Outside of the Device
On the back of the machine, locate the label containing the serial tag. For iMac all-in-one desktops, you can find this underneath the stand.

Open the Start menu.
Right-click on This PC.
Navigate to properties.
If there is no option for This PC, search for it in the Windows 10 search bar.
