Sharing Kaltura Videos with the Public (No Sign-in Required)

When a student creates a thread in a discussion board, they are prompted to enter text. 

  1. Click Add Content ( + ) icon to the right. If it is not visible, click the More (ellipse) icon to the right.

  2. Click Kaltura Media Submission.

  3. Find the video you wish to share and click Embed.

  4. Click Submit.

If You Do Not Own the Media

  1. Navigate to the Kaltura MediaSpace, or click on the shared video link and skip to Step 5.

  2. At the top right, click Guest → Login.

  3. Log in using your NetID credentials. The Guest label should change to your name.

  4. Click on the thumbnail for the media you would like to download.

  5. Below the player, click on the Download tab.

  6. Click the blue Download text next to any of the available formats. The content should start downloading to your computer.

    • If you do not see a download tab, contact the owner of the video and ask them to follow the guide below.

Note

If the recording includes the webcam and the content/desktop, the download will only include the primary video. The secondary recording will not be downloaded. Scroll down for details on getting the secondary video.

If You Do Own the Media

  1. Navigate to the Kaltura MediaSpace.

  2. Log in using your NetID credentials.

  3. Find the media you wish to download.

  4. Click on the pencil icon at the right of the screen to edit the media.

  5. Below the player, click on the Download tab.

  6. Select Available Formats. Then, check the Source File check box.

  7. Click Save.

  8. To leave the edit screen and return to the viewing screen, click Return to Media (located next to the Save button). When the Download tab appears, you can download the media.

Downloading Videos that Contain Webcam and Screen Capture

If you wish to download both the camera and screen video, you must be the owner of the video.

  1. Download the main video from Kaltura.

  2. To download the second video associated with the presentation, you need the entry ID of the presentation. This can be found by the URL of the video under the Share tab.

  3. The entry ID will look like a random string of characters starting with "1_". Copy this string and search for it on your My Media page.

  4. Two results will appear – the original one you already set to download and the second video.

  5. Follow the same steps to download the second video as used for the primary.

The steps in this section are not needed in order for captions to be shown on Kaltura videos embedded in HuskyCT. See Adding Captions to a Video in Kaltura and Sharing Videos in Discussion Boards and Other Areas

Using the free and open-source software VLC Media Player (https://www.videolan.org/ ) you can encode an existing caption file into a video. By encoding the captions within the video file, the file can be shared and played back with captions.

Note

You must be the owner of the video to download the .srt caption file(s). Both the video and caption file are needed to complete this process.

  1. Download the video file by following the instructions for Downloading Video Files from Kaltura

  2. After you’ve downloaded the video file, go back to the edit screen for the video.

  3. Click the Captions tab.

  4. If the video has existing captions you will see a file listed. Click the Download icon under the “Actions” heading in the table.

  5. Download the VLC Media Player if you don’t already have it installed.

    1. Go to https://www.videolan.org/ and click Download VLC.

    2. You will be directed to a new page. Don’t click any of the ad links on the page! Wait a few seconds and the download will start.

    3. Run the downloaded installer by clicking the file at the bottom of the screen or clicking Run when prompted.

  6. Open VLC.

  7. In VLC go to menu bar at the top of the window. Click Media > Convert/Save.

  8. In the window that opens, click Add and find the video file you downloaded.

  9. Then, check the box for Use a subtitle file and click Browse to find the .srt file that you downloaded from Kaltura.

  10. Click Convert/Save.

  11. In the new window that opens click the Profile drop-down and select the “Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)” profile.

  12. Click the Wrench icon next to the profile to bring up the profile settings.

  13. Select the Audio Codec tab.

  14. Check the box for Keep original audio track.

  15. Select the Subtitles tab.

  16. Check the boxes for Subtitles and Overlay subtitles on the video.

  17. Click Save. The profile editor window will close.

  18. Under the “Destination” section click Browse to choose a name for the the new subtitled video to be saved as.

  19. Click Start

  20. The VLC window will appear as if it’s playing media and say “Converting [file name]” at the top. Wait for this to finish.

  21. Once the conversion has finished, go to the destination file that you chose before the conversion process to find the subtitled video.

  1. After downloading your video file to your computer, open VLC Media Player

    • If you do not already have VLC Media Player installed, download it here.

  2. Click on Media

  3. Select Convert / Save or press Ctrl + R on your keyboard.  

  4. Click Add

  7. Navigate to Settings. 

  8. Click on Profile. 

  9. Select Audio - MP3.

  11. Name the destination file.
