Purchasing Instruments and Equipment:

All instruments are purchased through SFA Financial Service Office using the Marching/Pep Band funds or funds provided by the UConn Foundation following proper state purchasing procedures. The instruments on our inventory are considered state property and when they reach the end of their service with the band they are surrendered to University Surplus for disposal.

Wind Instruments

The UCMB primarily supplies instruments that are used exclusively for Marching/Pep Band that people would not usually have for their personal use (ie. marching mellophones, marching baritones, sousaphones, and large bore trombones and piccolos. Instruments such as flutes clarinets, and saxophones are usually the personal property of band members;  some of these instruments may be available in cases of need.

The UCMB partners with the Yamaha Corporation and the Conn-Selmer Corporation for wind instruments. The UCMB uses Conn 20KSP Sousaphones and Yamaha Mellos, Baritones, and Trombones. Having matching instruments throughout those sections is a great advantage in terms of sound and instrument maintenance.

Distribution of Wind Instruments

The above instruments are assigned during check-in to members of those sections.

Instrument Storage

Mellophones, Baritones, Trombones, and Piccolos are in the cared for by the individual students. Sousaphones are stored on one of the UCMB Trucks. Many instruments are used throughout the school year in both Marching and Pep Bands. When not in use these instruments are stored in lockers in the Music Building. Sousaphones are mostly stored on the truck but those in use for Pep Band can be kept in the storage room in the Music Building.

Rehearsal/Performance Equipment

In addition to musical instruments, the band maintains a significant inventory of sound equipment and rehearsal equipment. Those performance items are stored on our trucks and rehearsal items in our storage container at the Band Rehearsal Facility
