Finding the Computer Name for a Mac 

You can find the name or serial number of your Mac on the informational page for your computer or by looking at the back of the device.

Serial Numbers are 11-13 characters.

From Within the Operating System

To proceed, 

  1. Click on the Apple logo on the top left corner.
  2. Select About This Mac. The serial number is the last field.

From the Outside of the Device

On the back of the machine, locate the label containing the serial tag. For iMac all-in-one desktops, you can find this underneath the stand.

Finding the Computer Name for a PC

You can find the computer name in the information about the operating system or by looking on the computer.

Serial Numbers are 7 characters, ending with a 1 or 2.

From Within the operating system

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Right click on This PC.
  3. Navigate to properties.
    • If there is no option for This PC, search for it in the Windows 10 search bar.

    • The computer name is in the last section.

From the Outside of the Device

On desktops, you can find the black tag on top of the machine. On small formfactor machines and laptops, it is located on the back of the device.
