Changing a Local User Password in macOS / OS X

To change a local user password, 

  1. Click the Apple logo on the upper left corner.  Then click 
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. Click Users & Groups in the System Preferences.
  4. Select the user account for which you want wish to add or change the password for
  5. Click on the lock to make changes, then click .
  6. Click Change Password.
  7. Click Change Password once all of the relevant fields are completed.

  • If you are changing an existing password, enter the old password followed by the new password twice.
  • If you are creating a password for the first time, leave the old password field blank followed by the new password twice.

Click Change Password once all of the relevant fields are completed.
